Editor’s statement
AUDIO
The prior century’s cadaver casts so impressive a shadow that nearly anyone is liable occasionally to forget it’s passed. Inevitably (and we’re hardly the first to know it), a sensation of existing in between promotes anxiety. Still, we do our work now. And in this climate, the writer of value can afford neither to sneer at novelty nor to commit, as though fetishistically, to it. Not one of us, in fact, actually knows what comes next, although it is our job to do it. What is invaluable is the mere excitement of language as material with which to make things, as much sensation as sense, as much a stuff whereby to construct as a codex whereby to construe. This excitement, now as ever, trumps the thinness of fashion, trumps the straitjacket of theory, trumps the anxiety of operating within a historical fog.
It is this excitement that Raft Magazine means to put first and last.Brian Seabolt

Submission guidelines
Raft Magazine seeks new fiction, poetry, literary essays, and book reviews. Each contribution published in Raft is accompanied by a sound file, a recording of the author reading the work as he or she wishes it to be heard. Please wait for an acceptance notice before sending a sound file. To submit unpublished, unsolicited work, e-mail your manuscript as a .doc, .pdf, or .txt attachment to:
We impose no limit on word count, though keep in mind that we will request a complete sound recording of all accepted work; consequently, you should submit no larger a manuscript than you will be willing to read aloud.
Raft reserves exclusive first-time printing rights, which revert to the authors following publication in Raft Magazine. Past issues, with full text and audio content, are archived and remain accessible through Raft.
The submission deadline for issue 2 is December 16, 2010.
